Dans ma pratique, je m’intéresse à la manière dont la psyché perçoit et construit la réalité en la transgressant par la fabrication de fictions fantasmatiques. Mon travail se nourrit d’expériences subjectives où l’idéalisation opère une transfiguration mentale du réel ou lorsque, inversement, le désir subit l’épreuve de la réalité. Récemment, je me suis intéressée au paysage comme mode d’interprétation et de construction de la réalité. Ces recherches questionnent la part de subjectivité impliquée dans la perception du monde.
Les écrits de Christophe Colomb sont le point de départ du projet La femme dans la Lune sur lequel je travaillerai au Centre SAGAMIE. Dans La découverte de l’Amérique, la perception de l’explorateur fait l’objet d’une illusion complète dont il est lui-même l’instigateur ; alors qu’il foule le sol de l’Amérique, il persiste à se croire en Orient. Lors d’une résidence au Parc national Gros Morne à Terre-Neuve au printemps dernier, j’ai déambulé dans le territoire, munie d’une caméra vidéo portable et d’un appareil photo, en usant d’une carte de la Lune pour m’orienter. L’intention du projet La femme dans la Lune est de produire une confusion entre Terre-Neuve et la Lune en faisant valoir la préséance du regard subjectif.
En plus de ses nombreuses expositions au Québec, en France, en Allemagne, aux Pays-Bas et aux États-Unis, Catherine Bolduc a réalisé plusieurs résidences à l’étranger dont une au Künstlerhaus Bethanien à Berlin et au Studio du Québec à Tokyo. Le projet La femme dans la Lune sera présenté en 2017 à The Rooms à Saint-Jean de Terre-Neuve. L’artiste remercie le Conseil des arts du Canada.

In my practice, I am interested in the way in which the psyche perceives and transgresses reality through the forging of fantastical fictions. My work is sustained by subjective experiences in which idealization works a mental transfiguration of the real or when, inversely, desire comes up against reality. Recently, I took an interest in landscape as a means to interpret and build reality. This research questions the subjective side that is implied in our perception of the world.
Christopher Columbus’ writing are the starting point for the project La femme dans la Lune (The Women on the Moon), which I will be working on at Centre SAGAMIE. In La découverte de l’Amérique (The Discovery of America), the explorer’s perception is subjected to a total illusion of which he is the prime instigator; even as he steps on American soil, he stubbornly continues to believe he is in the Orient. Last spring, during a residency in Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland, I used a map of the moon to guide me while hiking through the territory equipped with a mobile video and photo camera. The goal of the La femme dans la Lune is to blur the distinction between Newfoundland and the Moon by insisting on the primacy of the subjective gaze.
In addition to her many exhibitions in Quebec, France, Germany, Netherlands and the US, Catherine Bolduc has undertaken several residencies, in particular at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin and the Studio du Québec in Tokyo. The project La femme dans la Lune will be presented in 2017 at The Rooms in Saint John’s, Newfoundland.
