Pour sa première édition, la Nouvelle Biennale est coproduite par les galeries Thomas Henry Ross art contemporain et Margot Eleanor Ross art actuel. Elles y présentent des œuvres de vingt-et-un artistes de haut niveau. Contrairement aux autres biennales qui fonctionnent sur un modèle plus traditionnel appuyé par une volonté étatique, la Nouvelle Biennale est entièrement financée par des intérêts privés, ce qui est une différence considérable pour ce type de structure. Cette manière de faire, malgré un financement réduit, permet une très grande flexibilité en ce qui a trait aux lieux où celle-ci pourra éventuellement se produire, mais surtout au moment où elle décidera de le faire. Le fait que son calendrier de production et son financement ne soient rattachés à aucun organisme extérieur est un avantage inestimable pour réfléchir un monde en constante mutation. S’il est vrai que la première phase de la Nouvelle Biennale a lieu à Montréal avec des intervenants nationaux, mais aussi internationaux, il serait souhaitable que les éditions subséquentes puissent être coproduites avec des partenaires provenant de l’extérieur de nos frontières nationales ou culturelles, afin de permettre d’adopter des points de vue multiples sur les réalités contemporaines et artistiques, transcendant ainsi le regard unidirectionnel sur l’art.
Un autre aspect inhabituel de cette Nouvelle Biennale est la possibilité d’y faire l’acquisition des œuvres présentées, ce qui permet d’une part d’aider à financer les éditions subséquentes de l’évènement, et d’autre part d’encourager les artistes, lesquels demeurent la raison d’être du projet, présent et à venir.
Au niveau thématique, le projet d’exposition de la Nouvelle Biennale s’articule autour du Zeitgeist, l’esprit du temps, thématique sous-jacente aux biennales depuis l’apparition de ce type d’évènement à Venise en 1895. Il ne s’agit pas ici de critiquer les modèles plus traditionnels de biennale mais plutôt d’entamer une réflexion qui permette de l’aborder autrement, avec une multitude de points de vue et de moyens. Historiquement, les biennales étaient calquées sur la formule des expositions universelles qui ont marqué le 19e et le 20e siècle. Nous ne pouvons réfléchir à ce que peut être un nouveau modèle de biennale sans considérer les préoccupations postcoloniales qui en découlent, puisque celles-ci sont au cœur de son développement depuis près de cent vingt ans. La Nouvelle Biennale propose d’initier une réflexion sur ces modèles imparfaits par une proposition qui est, elle aussi, imparfaite, mais incontournable et essentielle pour comprendre la réalité culturelle contemporaine telle qu’elle nous est présentée aujourd’hui.
Pour cette première édition de la Nouvelle Biennale, les artistes invités sont: Vikky Alexander, Itziar Barrio, Catherine Bodmer, Catherine Bolduc, Sebastien Cliche, Sylvie Cotton, Michel de Broin, Julien Discrit, Steve Giasson, Eleanor King, Chris Kline, Dejode & Lacombe, Manuela Lalic, Daniel Olson, James Paterson, Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf, Felicity Tayler, Lucille Uhlrich, Jonathan Villeneuve, Kim Waldron et Pavitra Wickramasinghe.
Le commissaire de l’évènement est aussi son fondateur et directeur: Jean-Michel Ross.

For its first edition, La Nouvelle Biennale is co-produced by Galerie Thomas Henry Ross art contemporain and Galerie Margot Eleanor Ross art actuel. The galleries will present artworks of twenty-one high-calibre artists. Unlike other biennials that operate on a more traditional model supported by the state, La Nouvelle Biennale is funded entirely by private interests, which is a considerable difference for this type of structure. Despite reduced funding, this way of working allows great flexibility in regard to where and when the biennial will eventually happen. The fact that its production schedule and funding are not linked to any external body is an invaluable advantage when reflecting on a constantly changing world. The first phase of La Nouvelle Biennale is held in Montreal, with national and international artists. It is hoped that subsequent editions can be co-produced with partners from outside of our national or cultural boundaries to allow an adoption of multiple perspectives on contemporary and artistic realities, transcending a unidirectional view of art.
Another unusual aspect of Nouvelle Biennale is the ability to acquire the works presented there, allowing on one hand to help fund subsequent editions of the event, and on the other to encourage artists, which remain the rationale for the project, present and future.
Thematically, the exhibition project of La Nouvelle Biennale focuses on the Zeitgeist (spirit of the time), a theme underlying the biennial since the appearance of this type of event in Venice in 1895. This is not meant to criticize the more traditional models of biennial but rather introduce a different approach, with a multitude of perspectives and resources. Historically, biennials were modeled on the formula of universal exhibitions that marked the 19th and 20th century. We cannot think about what may be a new biennial model without considering the postcolonial concerns arising from them, since they are at the heart of its development for nearly a hundred and twenty years. Nouvelle Biennale initiates a reflection about these imperfect models with a proposal that is also imperfect, but indispensable and vital to understanding contemporary cultural reality as it is presented to us today.
